PSL 2016: In a nutshell – Part III

The final round of PSL 2016 was the most exciting phase of the event. Each team was determined to win the title. As Peshawar and Quetta were the top two teams of first round. They faced each other in Qualifier 1. Probably the best match of this stage. Although it was a low scoring match. Yet cricket fans witnessed a fierce battle between the sides. Since Quetta won it on the last ball of the match.

Quetta Gladiators got all-out scoring just 133 runs. Yet this total was enough to win them the match. Peshawar almost chased the target, but they fell 1 run short of the victory. As Aizaz Cheema defended 3-runs required of the last delivery. As a result, Quetta went straight to the final.

Karachi Kings clashed Islamabad United in the Eliminator. Opposite to the Qualifier 1. It as a one sided match. In which Islamabad United defeated Karachi Kings easily by 9 wickets. As they chased down the target of 112 in the 16th over of the match. The hero for Islamabad United was Muhammad Sami. Since he took 5 wickets for just 8 runs. As a result, taking Islamabad to Qualifier 2.

Qualifier 2 was a similar story for Islamabad United. As they won comprehensively by 50 runs. Peshawar Zalmi was unable to chase down 176 and got all out for 126 runs. Sharjeel Khan was the star of the show scoring first century of the PSL. He scored a 117 of just 62 balls taking Islamabad to the final of PSL 2016.

Dubai hosted the final of PSL on 23 February, 2016. Islamabad won the toss and made a good decision to field first. Although Quetta put up a good score of 174 thanks to fifties scored by Ahmed Shahzad and Kumar Sagakkara. Still Islamabad made it look a below par score as they chased it down with 6 wickets in hand. Dwayne Smith’s 73 of  51 helped Islamabad United to win the first ever trophy of PSL.

Awards & Statistics

Man of the tournament was Ravi Bopara due to his all-round performance. Umar Akmal was the top-scorer of the event scoring 335 runs with 4 fifties under his name. Also, Islamabad’s key all-rounder Andre Russel took the most wickets of the tournament. He took 16 wickets in 10 matches.

Furthermore, PSL contributed a lot to find new talent. Muhammad Nawaz, Amir Yamin, Imran Khan Jr. and Hassan Ali are the findings of PSL.
